Process
- The majority of my work is hand thrown on the wheel. I love vertical forms such as vases and bottles, for what they represent as well as for their sensual curves and the play of positive and negative space. Bowls and plates can become canvases for glaze experimentations.
- Large vessels I throw thickly. I then carve out designs or figures with small chisels, at times taking up to two weeks to finish a pot. I was first inspired to carve from seeing pre-Columbian temple artwork such as in Copán, and from studying African art and wood carvings. I am continually inspired by forms, shapes, and color I see while hiking in the bosque, traveling through deserts and forests, or while diving in the ocean.
